Welcome to the Oldest Coal Camp in Colorado!

Coal Creek, founded in the early 1870s shortly after coal was discovered, boasts a rich history. In November 1878, the first plat maps were filed by William and Henry Teller in Fremont and Arapaho County. By October 8, 1881, approximately 65 citizens of Coal Creek petitioned to incorporate, and on February 27, 1882, the town officially became incorporated.

During the 1880s, Coal Creek was a thriving, vibrant community with a bustling economy. It was home to 16 saloons, two drugstores, two hotels, grocery stores, a company store, numerous millinery shops, a lumber yard, a notions store, a macaroni factory, a theater, and even a couple of racetracks. The town’s baseball team was highly regarded throughout Colorado, and its ballpark was a hub of activity. The town also had a brass band and threw an annual Fourth of July celebration that attracted visitors from all over the state. Coal Creek’s railroad depot was a busy center for transporting coal, freight, and passengers. At its peak, the population swelled to about 5,000 people.

In 1907, a devastating fire broke out at Alf Salmon’s Bottling Works, causing damage estimated at nearly $200,000 and nearly wiping out the town. Today, only a few original buildings remain, with the town’s population now under 500. However, the historic schoolhouse survived the blaze and is still standing today, repurposed as the town hall (although the second story has since been closed).

Now, Coal Creek is a peaceful, close-knit residential community located in Eastern Fremont County, southwest of the Town of Florence. It sits in a stunning natural setting, with Pikes Peak to the northeast, the Wet Mountains to the south-southwest, and the Royal Gorge to the west. Coal Creek offers residents easy access to larger towns like Pueblo to the east, Colorado Springs to the northeast, and Canon City to the west.

Since 2000, the population has grown by 16.5%, yet the town has managed to preserve its rural charm. Residents enjoy the benefits of small-town living—low traffic, affordable living, and an abundance of fresh air and tranquility. The scenic surroundings provide numerous recreational opportunities, while the sense of community remains strong. Many residents appreciate the town’s slow pace of growth, hoping to maintain the unique qualities that make Coal Creek so special. While the town is content with its current pace, there is interest in attracting small retail or commercial services, such as a convenience store, restaurant, or country shop, to further enhance the local economy without compromising its peaceful atmosphere.

Coal Creek offers the perfect blend of rural living, community spirit, and access to the best of Colorado’s natural beauty.
